Every AI recruiter can source. The durable edge is whether it screens to your hiring manager's bar — not the generic one.
The first wave of AI recruiting tools solved a real problem: volume. Sourcing 800 million profiles is no longer a differentiator — it's a feature of the database. What nobody shipped cleanly is the thing TA leaders actually get fired over: did the shortlist match what the hiring manager had in their head?

What to look for when you evaluate
If you're assessing AI recruiting tools this year, three questions separate the field:
- How is the ICP captured? If the answer is "we ingest your job description," it's not alignment — it's keyword matching with extra steps.
- How does the system explain a rejection? A good one tells you which HM criterion the candidate failed, and how hard.
- What happens when the HM rejects a shortlisted candidate? Does the ranking model update, or does the recruiter just filter harder next time?
